What Is the Metaverse, Exactly?


The word “metaverse” may sound like something out of a science fiction novel, but it’s a term that has been around for decades. The concept was first explored in a 1982 novel called Snow Crash, which imagined what would happen if people could enter online worlds and interact with other human beings. Since then, the metaverse has become more than just a wild idea—it’s something we can see coming into existence today.

It can be hard to define the metaverse.

The metaverse is a term that has been used in science fiction since the early 1990s. In 1992, Neal Stephenson coined the term “metaverse” in his novel Snow Crash; however, it can be traced back to 1990 when William Gibson wrote about a similar concept in his short story Burning Chrome.

It’s important to note here that I’m not talking about an actual place or location you can visit; instead, we’re referring to the idea of being able to interact with other people and entities within a virtual setting. In this sense, there are no physical borders separating users; instead, everyone is interconnected through the medium of technology (e.g., smartphones). Thus far, this sounds rather romantic—and indeed, there are many potential benefits from having such an interconnected world—but let’s take a closer look at what is meta exactly defines this type of virtual reality experience, as well as some potential drawbacks associated with it before delving into its uses later on in this article.

Even though this is a digital world, it’s also real. It has the same laws of nature and physics as our universe does, but it also has its own conventions and rules. Some metaverses exist today:

  • Online communities like Reddit

The next step will be creating a fully immersive and interactive virtual reality experience that can be accessed through devices ranging from smartphones to VR headsets.

The vision of the metaverse is something like what you’d see if you took all the different forms of digital content—from social media to video games to e-books—and combined them into one giant space where people can interact with each other and explore new worlds together (or on their own).
